**Surface**: Modular construction can adapt to nearly any solid surface.

**Underground**: Colonies may be excavated within stable geographic areas, taking advantage of natural caverns or hollows.

**Asteroid**: A variation of underground colony builds includes asteroid excavation and potentially spinning the asteroid for simulated gravity.

**Underwater**: Planets and icy moons with significant hydrospheres may support modular colonies below the water or ice surface.

**Aerostatic**: Modular colony building supported aerostatically such as within the upper layers of gas giant atmospheres.
