ATTRIBUTE SCORE TEST
When an Adventurer chooses to perform a perform a task for which they have no explicitly defined skill or training, they may only use their base Attribute Score in their attempt to succeed.
There are two different methods for resolving an Attribute Score Test depending on whether the Adventurer is pitting their ability against nature and circumstance, or against others:
- Unopposed Attribute Score Test - the Adventurer is testing their ability against nature or circumstance
For example, an Adventurer lifting an extremely heavy or bulky item, with no Lifting skill could attempt the lift using just Strength.
The Guide may consider the task to require a skill in order to succesfully complete the task.
In such an instance, an unskilled Adventurer faces a -10 effective skill level for that task.
- Opposed Attribute Score Test - the Adventurer is testing their ability against others' abilities
For example, an Adventurer challenges a local tough to a barroom arm-wrestling match, using Stength on Strength if neither side were a trained arm wrestler.
However, an unskilled combatant defaults to a -10 effective skill level when facing a trained or skilled opponent.
If the opponent has trained as an arm-wrestler, the Adventurer may be facing a severe disadvantage in this contest.
